A LASTING IMPACT: Mike Keahon ’73

Coach Bill Kalkman, Ron Smith, Charles Hampton ’04 and Devon Allen ’13 honor Coach Mike Keahon.

The Brophy community continues to remember Coach Mike Keahon ’73 following his passing on June 22, 2025. A Hall of Fame student-athlete, beloved coach, and trusted mentor, Mike’s impact on Brophy can be felt across generations, in the young men he formed, the program he built, and the example he set each day.

Long before he became such an important figure in Brophy athletics, Mike distinguished himself as one of the top runners in school history. As a senior in 1973, he won the state championship in the mile and set school records in the 800 and 1600 meters, marks that stood for nearly 30 years. His accomplishments as a student-athlete earned him a place in the inaugural class of the Brophy Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000, but his influence on the school would grow even deeper in the decades that followed.

Mike returned to Brophy and became the centerpiece of its cross country and track & field programs for more than 25 years. Under his leadership, Brophy won the 2003 state championship in cross country and track & field state titles in 2011 and 2013. Yet those achievements tell only part of the story. For the many students who came through his program, Mike was far more than a successful coach. He was a steady presence, a source of belief and encouragement, and a mentor whose care extended well beyond race day.

Again and again, former athletes returned to one of Mike’s defining gifts: his ability to change the trajectory of a young man’s life.

“He opened doors I did not even know existed,” said Marco Ruiz ’13. “Because of his commitment to us, I was able to unlock opportunities for myself and my family that I never imagined.”

Mike Keahon was Brophy’s first-ever state champion in the mile in 1973.

For many runners, Mike did more than develop talent. He helped young men see a bigger future for themselves and gave them the confidence to pursue it. That influence often extended far beyond competition.

“What started on the track became a lifelong blueprint for success,” said Charles Hampton ’04. “He showed up with a level of loyalty and selflessness that shaped not just runners, but young men.”

Mike challenged students to work hard, stay disciplined, and carry themselves with humility, but he also modeled those values in the way he lived. His consistency, quiet care, and unwavering commitment left impressions that endured long after high school.

Others remembered not only his leadership, but the kind of man he was.

“You will never find a kinder person who cared more about people,” said Bobby Grant ’14. “His goal was always to help us realize how special we were and get us to places we never thought we could go.”

That sentiment speaks to the heart of Mike’s impact at Brophy. He opened doors, expanded horizons, and helped shape habits of perseverance, accountability, and purpose that carried into college, careers, family life, and friendships.

In 2017, Brophy recognized that extraordinary contribution by presenting him with the Michael P. Klein Award, honoring his dedication to the school and its mission. That commitment now continues through the Michael P. Keahon ’73 Scholarship, established this spring through a gift Mike left to the school. Created to reflect his belief in excellence, generosity, and opportunity, the scholarship will help future Brophy students benefit from the same values Mike embodied throughout his life.

Mike Keahon’s presence is missed, but his impact remains part of Brophy. It lives on in the students he guided, in the culture he helped shape, and in the generations of young men who continue to carry his example forward.
