Alumni

Dear Brophy Alumni,

I want to welcome our new alumni from the Class of 2024 and congratulate them for all they have done to continue a tradition of excellence on and off campus as they begin their next adventure. Their Brophy career began during the pandemic, taking summer courses online and then starting school at home until we were finally able to have everyone back on campus. They did not have the opportunity to find new friendships during summer school or participate in the traditional Freshman Retreat, but by the end of their freshman year, and especially during their time on campus, they made a difference. The Class of 2024 is one that all Brophy Alumni can be proud of as Men for Others.

This is evidence of our Jesuit tradition and how it forms young men into servant leaders. Despite how they started their journey, by the end they were able to enjoy the benefits of a Brophy education working with teachers, participating in activities, serving their community, witnessing the world through immersion trips and attending retreats at Manresa. As a school community, we relied on our Jesuit history and its ability to overcome challenges to find the good in all things. After Ignatius was struck by a cannonball at the Battle of Pamplona 503 years ago, his life path was altered. It would have been easy to give up, but he realized he had to get out of his own way and discover a world that he had never experienced, seeing new places and meeting new individuals who helped him discover his God-given gifts. Another event in Jesuit history that the Society of Jesus was able to overcome was the suppression of the order in the late 1700s through 1815. During that time, St. Joseph Pignatelli, SJ, was the one who held the Society together, continuing to accept novices, ensuring that the Jesuits would continue.

In these situations, the Society of Jesus was not only founded through the actions of St. Ignatius, but also continued to expand its influence despite being suppressed. Brophy’s history has a similar pattern, one of celebration when the Brophy family donated land and money to build the school at 4701 N. Central Avenue in 1928, but only to see it close in 1934 due to the Great Depression before reopening in 1952. Despite its closure, the Jesuits remained at Brophy. Land was sold to the Diocese of Tucson, eventually becoming St. Francis Xavier Parish and School, as well as Xavier College Preparatory, while the Brophy Chapel was used as the parish church. Even during these times, the Jesuits maintained their traditions in North Central Phoenix and served the community. In 1952, Brophy reopened its doors welcoming the Class of 1956, educating with a curriculum that taught students how to think critically and providing opportunities to discover their God-given gifts to share with the world.

If you have not been back to campus recently and witnessed Brophy in action, you are in for a treat. Not only will you still see the traditions of the past in the buildings, clubs, sports, retreats and immersion trips, but also the new academic and extracurricular opportunities available to students like Introduction to Design and Tech Foundations, Introduction to Robotics, Architectural Drawing, AI Foundations, 3D Industrial Design, Rocketry and so much more. Feel free to contact me at mward@brophyprep.org to schedule a tour.

The Brophy community looks forward to celebrating the 2024 Grand Reunion, October 4-6, for all classes that graduated in years ending in 4 and 9. Visit the Brophy Alumni page for details on this year’s reunion activities and the individual class parties with your Xavier classmates. We are also planning alumni events in Phoenix and around the U.S. to keep you informed about how you can help Brophy as well as opportunities to make connections with Brophy alumni in your area. Please keep us updated—weddings, births, career milestones, etc.—and continue to follow the Brophy Alumni Association on LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and X

Have a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing you back on campus!

Go Broncos!

Young Alumni On Par at 4th Annual Golf Tournament

The vibrant spirit of camaraderie and competition was on full display in April at the fourth annual Alumni Golf Tournament, held at the picturesque Papago Golf Club. This event has quickly become a staple for recent graduates, and this year’s tournament was no exception, boasting a complete sellout and reinforcing its status as a highlight on the Brophy alumni calendar. The tournament brought together a diverse group of young alumni to reconnect with old friends and make new ones while enjoying a day on the greens. A significant thank you is owed to all Bronco Sponsors. Their support ensures that events like these continue to thrive, fostering a strong alumni network. Special recognition goes to lead sponsor, Thanasi Panagiotakopoulos ’04, of LifeManaged.
Brophy Alumni at 4th Annual Golf Tournament
Erik Meyer, Cal Kendrick, Jack Kerkorian, and Jack Hutt, all from the Class of 2014, emerged victorious as the 2024 champions. Their skill and teamwork were evident as they navigated the challenging course, earning them bragging rights and the tournament trophy. The Papago Golf Club, with its lush fairways and stunning views, once again provided the perfect backdrop for this memorable event. Participants enjoyed not only the golf but also the chance to reconnect and reminisce among friends. As the event came to a close, plans were already underway for next year’s tournament. The organizing committee is committed to making the 2025 Alumni Golf Tournament an unforgettable experience. Mark your calendars and start practicing your swing! The Timeless Nature of Storytelling

Dale Marini ’66 has a passion for storytelling and a deep appreciation for the legends who shape our cultural fabric. This passion is evident in his recent tribute to the iconic sportscaster Vin Scully, which was featured in the Loyola Marymount University magazine in 2016. Marini’s heartfelt essay has now gained further recognition, being included in the newly published collection, “Perfect Eloquence, An Appreciation of Vin Scully.”
Dale Marini

Scully, known for his unparalleled career as the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers, left an indelible mark on the world of sports broadcasting. His distinctive voice and ability to connect with fans made him a beloved figure across generations. For Marini, Scully was more than just a broadcaster; he was a storyteller whose narratives brought the game to life and connected listeners to the heart of baseball.

In his tribute, Marini captures the essence of Scully’s contribution to the world of sports. He reflects on how Scully’s voice became a familiar and comforting presence, guiding fans through the highs and lows of countless baseball seasons. Marini’s essay, originally published in the LMU magazine, resonated with readers, highlighting not just Scully’s professional achievements but also his ability to touch lives through his genuine love for the game and its community.

The recognition of Marini’s essay in “Perfect Eloquence” is a testament to his ability to convey the profound impact Scully had on his audience. This collection of remembrances brings together voices from various backgrounds, all united in their admiration for Scully.

The publication of “Perfect Eloquence” ensures that Scully’s legacy will continue to be remembered and cherished by future generations.
